Can I Ship Items In My Vehicle When Going From US To Canada

Yes, you can ship items inyour vehicle to Canada but there are some strings attached to things, so read this guide to know about the rules, laws and fees (if any). When you’re moving to Canada, or even going there for a casual visit, you’ll have more items than just your vehicle to ship. This means paying several hundred dollars for transporting personal belongings via a courier service. However, there’s a workaround that can help you save hundreds of dollars in shipping fees and that’s to put the personal use items inside the car and take some with you on your flight to Canada. This way, you may even not have to pay for anything besides the car transport cost and get all of your belongings transported safely to Canada.

However, remember, not every car transport company allows shipping personal items with the car. So, first thing to keep in mind is to ask the car transport company if they allow this. If so, then there are a few things to keep in mind, read on to know more.

There’s a weight Limit:

Yes, even if some car transport companies allow you to ship your personal items inside the car, there will be a 100lbs weight limit. And to be fair, that’s very generous of them because with increased weight, the trailer burns more fuel and that increases the cost but the transport companies don’t charge for up to 100lbs of belongings. If the weight goes above this, you may either be asked to take some items out or the cost to ship the car may increase.

Your Belongings Are Not Insured:

Cars that are transported via a shipping company are insured by default through Cargo Insurance. However, this insurance coverage doesn’t apply to the personal belongings inside the car. So if they get damaged, lost or stolen, there’s nothing the auto transport company or their insurance provider would be able to do.

You may think this is unfair but the problem is that car transport companies are licensed to transport cars only, they don’t have the license to move other things like a courier company. And since they get insurance based on their license, they don’t get coverage for anything other than vehicles.

You Need to Declare All Items at the Border:

Yes, you will have to declare everything you’re moving at the customs border so be sure to prepare the list of things. Also, unless the items have been in your personal use before and/or you’re their owner, they may come under import, which means you’ll have to pay duties on them.

You can get more information about what qualifies for moving and not considered an import from your transport but that’s the general rule.

Lastly, Do Not Do These Things:

● Do not expose the items in your car, properly conceal them under boxes and keep those boxes below the windows. This way, no one from the outside will know there’s something inside the car, increasing the chances of theft

● Do not put highly valuable items like jewellery inside the car – if they get lost or stolen, the loss will not be covered by insurance

● Do not transport any items that are illegal or even objectionable like drugs, ammunition, weapons, hazardous chemicals, and so on

● Do not put any box at the driver seat or any place where it obstructs the entry of driver because the transporter may need to move your car a few times during the transit
